About Gen Atkinson
Gen Atkinson is a Brisbane-based contemporary artist whose work celebrates colour, emotion, memory and connection.
Working primarily in acrylics, Gen creates bold, expressive paintings inspired by flowers, family life and the coastal landscapes of South East Queensland. Drawing on memories of childhood holidays at Surfers Paradise, her work often reflects the vibrant colours, sunshine and sense of freedom associated with the Australian coast.
Her distinctive style combines playful forms, joyful colour palettes and simplified shapes that invite viewers to connect with their own memories and emotions. Through colour and composition, Gen explores themes of love, belonging, resilience and everyday beauty.
A lifelong creative, Gen spent years building a creative vocabulary through painting, jewellery making, sculpture, gardening and design before having the confidence to claim the title of artist.
Today, her growing collections of florals, fish and abstract works reflect both her curiosity and her delight in the world around her.
An avid gardener, many of Gen's paintings begin with flowers gathered from local markets, friends' gardens or her own courtyard. These blooms become a starting point for works that celebrate colour, connection and the people she loves.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Gen is the mother of three daughters and works in marketing and fundraising alongside her art practice. She lives and creates in Brisbane, Queensland.
